Oh! My God! Colton turned 9 months old the second day we came back from Hong Kong. He woke up 4 to 5 times a night. Sometimes he could stay awake for an hour or two. The worst night he woke up at 2 and I put him down then he woke up and I put him down. This cycled repeated for couple times and it took me 3 hours to put him back to sleep. A week after we came back. He got chicken pox. Yes, chicken pox. I didn’t believe it either but that was what he had. I’m sure that he got it from Hong Kong since the incubation time is 2 weeks. And 2 weeks ago we were at our friend’s son 1st birthday party. Now with the jet lag from the trip, plus the new tricks he learned, plus the chicken pox, his sleep cycle was broken into pieces. He was a good sleeper before, now he turned to another baby at night. It’s terrible. He pulled himself up in his crib and cried out loud and asked for help. For God’s sake, he just learned how to pull himself up but not able to sit back down. So we had to rescue him a couple times during the night. He forgot he could suck his thumb to sooth himself to sleep. It was really stressful for us and for him. About 2 weeks after coming back, he woke up once a night. But he could stay awake for 1 hour. I tried giving him water, singing him a lullaby, nursing him, etc. Nursing is the easiest way to calm him down without fighting with him, but I know he doesn’t need that feeding anymore. So last week, I called the public health nurse for help and I got some books from the library that are recommended. Now Colton is under sleep training. Every time he wakes up at the middle of the night, we let him cried for about 10 mins then go to him and check if every thing is fine and he’s safe. Then we waited a little longer each time until he fall asleep on his own. The whole process took us almost 2 hours. Every night was like a battle. We also found out that he behave a lot better with Chris. So I asked Chris to do it at night. The night before last night we used the baby monitor to watch him instead of going into his room every certain minutes, he finally fell asleep on his own in a awkard position. He was kneeling with his face was on the mattress. Last night he just fussed a little and fell asleep with his awkard position again. Twenty minutes after, I put a blanket on him then he WOKE UP! He stood up and cried like the nights before! Then Chris went in and he took less then 3 minutes to put him down. We’ll see how Colton is doing tonight.
